Land Acknowledgement

Fran Astino Consulting respectfully acknowledges that we are situated on the ancestral homeland of the Nonotuck and Pocumtuc peoples. This land, along the banks of the Kwanitekw (Connecticut River), has been a site of gathering and exchange among Indigenous peoples for thousands of years. These peoples were forcibly displaced from their lands by European colonizers in the 17th century.

The Pocumtuc, whose territory extended from present-day Northampton northward through the Connecticut River Valley, played a significant role in the region's history and culture. Their principal village, Nawottock, was located near present-day Northampton.

We recognize the continued presence and resilience of Indigenous peoples in this region, including members of the Nipmuc Nation, the Wampanoag Tribe of Gay Head (Aquinnah), the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe, and descendants of the Pocumtuc and Nonotuck peoples. We honor their past, present, and future contributions to our community and commit to supporting Indigenous sovereignty.

As we benefit from living and working on this land, we acknowledge the painful history of genocide, forced removal, and land theft that has impacted Indigenous communities. We commit to learning about and amplifying Indigenous voices, supporting Indigenous-led initiatives, and working towards justice and healing in partnership with Indigenous peoples.

This acknowledgment is a small step toward addressing the erasure of Indigenous histories and presence. We encourage all to reflect on their own relationship with this land and to join in efforts to support Indigenous rights and cultural revitalization.
